The Story

Inspired by true events, this uplifting and powerful new musical moves between past and present to tell a story of family, courage, memory, and hope. When an aging Holocaust survivor shares the story of his childhood escape from Nazi-occupied Denmark with a young American student, the past comes vividly to life – guided by a touch of magic – as his family races against time, trusting friends, neighbors, and strangers to help them reach a fishing boat bound for Sweden. Across the dark waters of The Sound, they discover that even in history’s most terrifying moments, humanity can shine with extraordinary light.

Why this story now?

I worry a lot these days. About the state of the world, the state of our country, and the safety of the Jewish community. How did we get here? How do we fix this? I wonder where basic human decency has gone. I am shocked at how easily and quickly we got here. How deep hatred of Jews has resurfaced within a span of only 80 years.

The story of THE SOUND is one of courage, kindness, and human decency. When the Nazi regime was working on a final solution for the Jewish people across Europe, the Nation of Denmark said a resounding NO, and saved their Jews by hiding them and eventually sending them across the Sound, on fishermen boats, to safety in Sweden.

My father and his family were on one of those boats. The kindness and fearlessness of the Danish and Swedish people is the reason I’m here today. Alive. To tell this story for generations to come.

We carry a responsibility, every one of us, to tell our stories and the stories of our ancestors. The positive ones alongside the negative. Not to sound cliché – but history does repeat itself and we can – we MUST – learn from it.

I find myself drawn again and again to decency, to kindness. I hope this musical moves you and reminds you that even in the darkest moments – especially in those moments – we can still find the light.
